165/365. California here we come ~ Phantom Planet (right back where we started from)

This shot is from yesterday (a day late uploading). Erin and I were invited to do a shoot an event out near Stanford called Tour de Cure. We packed plenty of light, but clearly the big fireball in the sky was on our side this time.

Anyhow, I was most impressed with the D3's dynamic 3D AF tracking (the D700 has this too). I had only fooled around with it out of curosity but never had a real use for it until this day. It now makes much more sense why you saw crowds like this at the superbowl. 10 / 10 shots came in focus every time I shot a cyclists. I was very impressed.

Finally, what most come for, there is no strobist setup info. Just me with my camera, snapping away on the sidelines.

See ya in a few hours for todays photo.

There was something a touch dreamlike about the vista seen from this angle. The gentle rolling contours of the grassy meadows are contrasted against the stern profile of Beblowe Crag, crested by its famous castle which juts boldly into the horizon's luminous clouds.

I'm a complete PS n00b, and this is my second try at an HDR image. The clouds were really fantastic this day (although the wind cause artifacts because of the moving leaves.) The light however was really flat. I'm thinking good light is key to getting HDRs that really pop.

Details:
D80 w/ 18-200VR, 3 raw files 0+/-2EV, merged in PS CS3, saturation tweaked, knocked down to 8bits, sharpened, then an USM 50% strength, 50pixel radius (Local Contrast Enhancement technique from Luminous Landscape.) The result is probably way over-sharpened... but subsequent attempts weren't as good, so I stopped here.
